MIAMI, September 25, 2004. Join us in welcoming artist Jon Peters as we open sLick , Peters' first solo exhibit in the Miami area, on Saturday, September 25 from 7-11PM. sLick extends to our Project Level with recent paintings by Vanessa McKnight .
In his epoxy, acrylic, and lacquer paintings, Jon Peters aims at an architectural dynamic that evokes a multi-sensory physical experience and a sense of something made well with the appropriate materials. “The goal of my work is to seduce the viewer and once seduced to entice the viewer to have a closer look. Color and surface are the vehicle, and I immerse myself in detail but enjoy the cadence of my work. ”
Peters's work concerns process and perfection: the sanding and applying of layers whether it is lacquer, epoxy, encaustic or acrylic. His result: a one dimensional sensual object that appears three dimensional - for his use of color, translucency in surface, and edge.
Vanessa McKnight's recent series offers cinematic glimpses into an intimate and sensual world. Her figurative paintings are innocently voyeuristic - advertising private moments in cropped enlarged proportions to reveal something otherwise hidden about the mood of the subject. McKnight's nonfigurative canvases are vivid manifestations of sensory experience. Something sublimely tactile and tempting in her use of texture and color lures the senses abruptly. Each piece expresses desire, appetite, and passion that is somehow contained within borders of confinement.
“This is a series of clips and suggestions, parts of an enigmatic whole, rather than a depiction of an entire scene.” The almost claustrophobic closeness and severe cropping paired with the ultra-real satin surfaces give McKnight's paintings their provocative power and sense of life.
sLick opens in conjunction with 55th Street Station's Last Saturdays in the Courtyard on Saturday, September 25 from 7PM through 11PM and runs through November 20, 2004 . Please contact gallery for additional information or visual material.
